Noise Test

I did some long exposure shots to see how long I could leave the shutter open before developing heavy noise. Reason, for an upcoming project. =) I also played with my new spotlight. Noise was not bad at all in this photo. I also ran a 4 minute shot towards the sky, and tiny bit came up, but manageable. I just want to test how long I can expose before I lose hope it ridding the noise in post-processing. I could shoot film...

Night Photography

Good morning.

Here are some recent photographs I have taken after dark.

The first was inspired by the light coming through the fog; I had to grab my camera and tripod to take some shots! Previous shots had more fog, but it shifted and dissipated more every shot.
50mm, f/11, 20" (60" total), 4-image stitch.

The second was inspired by the moon; It was in a nice position with the tower. This one I experimented with a flashlight and "painted" the tower. I would have preferred the moon to be more natural looking, but to achieve that would require more post-processing or silhouetted tower. I wanted the tower. I do have a moon shot with detail that I took that same night, but would rather minimize editing and leave it as much "as shot" as possible.

The third was inspired by my girlfriend. Her name, her words, illuminating from my cell screen are the last things I see before I fall asleep. I love that. Perfect way to end the night. Capturing this moment took some effort, but I think it came out pretty decent. I used an LED light with scotch taped over it for diffusion--since LED is so bright--and lit the comforter blanket. The reason is because I wanted to see some of the comforter in the shot without overexposing the screen. Using the light allowed me to expose for the screen and get the blanket at the same time. Manually focused with one hand, held phone with the other--staying completely still--remote fired after focus, and light shined after remote fire.

Mind you, these are .jpg files that have been compressed even further by Blogger and look horrendous compared to 16 bit .tif...

Enjoy and please leave your criticism!

Gallery Review of Foreclosure, USA

Hello readers,

Today the class and I went to University of the Pacific's Reynolds Gallery to take a gander at photographer, Kirk Crippens, Foreclosure, USA exhibition.

Likes:  I loved the large prints and how they were presented. Even though the photos were framed two different ways in two different rooms, I thought both suited the concept well. Simple. The colors/tones were nice and complimented each other throughout the entire exhibit. I thought the overcast skies in ALL his landscape photos was a good way of showing gloomy times, being in a recession and all, and keeping it consistent was a plus. The lighting in some of the photos were very captivating.

Dislikes:  I am pretty anal when it comes to quality. The prints, presentation were very nice, but the use of a wide angle lens left the edges very soft compared to the center. That is not Kirk's fault at all, just how the lens works. I also understand that most of the subject matter is in the center of the image, so having soft edges is not THAT bad. I tend to focus too much on the whole picture, quality wise, and soft edges is not my thing. But, that is only my opinion. Hey, I love wide angle, just hate that most wide angle lenses cannot stay sharp throughout.

Overall, I thought the show was nice. Definitely showed a lot of work and time put into it. Personally it is not my style of work, but I respect the work shown and the photographer who shot it. We all have our own styles and views.

That is all I have to say at the moment.

Take care everyone.

Back Again!

First day of class is here. It has been a long day so far. Tired, and still have gym at 5pm.

Good to be back, though.

Have a good day!
